Hello and welcome to Wyrd.Cloud !
- What is Wyrd.Cloud ?
Wyrd.Cloud is a website based on the popular phpBB forum software. The idea behind Wyrd.Cloud is to provide a private place for family members and close friends to be able to talk together, a place where they can securely share things, discuss what they're passionate about, keep up to date with what's going on and get to know each other better.
- Why not just use Facebook or WhatsApp ?
Good question. The problem with sharing things on Facebook and WhatsApp is that whilst you may get a few likes and replies right at that moment, the information or content is rapidly lost to the mass of nonsene that is posted there daily. On a forum like this one, you're sharing things directly to people who are genuienly interested and concerned, your posts are sorted by category and will not disappear the next day, unlike on Facebook where they are forever forgotten, replaced by an advert for plastic underware on wish.com and a post from a friend you never speak to about which type of cat they most look like...
- Where is Wyrd.Cloud hosted ?
The forum is self-hosted. The servers are physically located in the center of France at my parents house. The servers are owned and maintained by us, no third parties are involved, we have full control and responsibility over everything here. More information on the servers can be found here, once connected.
- Where did the name Wyrd.Cloud come from ?
Wyrd (pronounced like wierd) is the name of an old Anglo-Saxon / Norse concept that can be roughly explained as a mix of destiny and an all connecting web of the gods. You can read more about it on wikipedia and wikiquote. Cloud is the term we generally associate with things being on the internet, on far way servers that run on magic and unicorn rainbows. It also happends to be one of the possible domain name extensions that are available these days (like .com, .net, .org, etc.). The Wyrd part came from Dad, the Cloud part came from me. If you think about it, it makes sense for a family oriented forum, Cloud being the technical side with the notion of servers connecting everybody together over the internet, and the Wyrd being the mystical all-connecting web of things that relate us all together.
- How do I get access to the forum ?
Forum access is restricted to members only, and member registration is done by invitation only, so you cannot sign-up by yourself. As such, we base invitations on the following criteria ; you either need to be a blood relative (spouses, children and immediate family included), or a long term close family friend who is well appreciated. In terms of actually looking at and participating on the forum, it should display properly on mobile phones, however you'll get the best experience on a device with a large screen, such as a desktop or laptop computer or a tablet.
- So how does the member registration work ?
If you've been invited, simply reply to the invitation with the following :
Username : Your first name, or a well-known short name (for example Daniel, or Dan ... Michael, or Mik). Nothing else is accepted.
Email address : A valid and unique email address is required for each member. An email will be sent for verification.
Avatar (Profile photo) : If forums seem a little complicated for you, provide a profile photo and we'll set it up for you.
Once signed-up, a random password will be given to you, which you can change once you're connected to the forum.
Initial family names to be invited ; Clayton, Wootton, Taylor, Arrowsmith ... along with others to follow.
If you havn't yet been invited, but would like to be, and you think that you're qualified, simply contact me !
- What are the forum rules ?
For now I think we'll sum it up as this ; Don't be a dick !
Obvious common sense applies, no pornography or blatently illegal content, or links to such.
The odd racist/sexist joke made in good fun is fine, but blatent racism/sexism is not acceptible.
Anything promoting drugs, terrorism, homophobia, hate, and so on will be removed.
There may be underage kids on the forum, so mind your f**king language.
Post things in the correct place and try your best at spelling properly.
All members should introduce themselves in the appropriate section.
- Pffttt, forums, rules, invitations, that all sounds unnecessarliy complicated...
It really isn't ! Especially once you get used to it ! If you need help understanding something, just ask !
You can contact me here, on Facebook, or anywhere else you like, I'm on most things...
- Is the Wyrd.Cloud project limited to just the forum ?
To start off with, yes, it's just the forum. However, the general plan for the future is to offer more features and services. These may inculde things like an FTP server for file exchanges, a Plex server for video sharing, a radio server for music or podcasts, website hosting for members blogs or a multitude of other side projects related to both servers side things and actual content. Nothing is set in stone nor promised, we'll start off slowly and see how things progress, depending on the number of active members and people intereseted in each project.
I hope you all enjoy the forum, have fun ! - Dan
